A look at real-world applications shows that biogas and biomethane are central to the energy transition in the sugar industry.
The current issue of the renowned trade journal Sugar Industry (Volume 151, Issue 2/2026) features the article
“Decarbonizing sugar production with biogas and biomethane.”
The article provides a detailed look at our innovative large-scale project in Poland:
A biomethane plant designed specifically to meet the seasonal energy needs of sugar production. During the sugar beet campaign, biogas is used directly at the plant to replace fossil natural gas. Surplus biogas is processed into biomethane and fed into the gas grid—generating stable value outside of the campaign period.
The article provides an outlook on:
Practical engineering insights rather than theory
Flexible, seasonal plant operation
High organic loads and biological challenges
Digestate treatment and a functioning circular economy
A realistic path to CO₂-neutral sugar production
With a processing capacity of approximately 300,000 t/a of byproducts from sugar production and a biogas output of over 8,500 m³/h during the campaign, the project demonstrates how a high renewable energy coverage rate, process stability, and economic viability can be achieved together. The article highlights robust solutions for sustainable industrial processes—because biogas can be much more than just a supplementary technology.
