Construction of a biomethane plant began in the Zeitz Chemical and Industrial Park in spring 2025. Krieg & Fischer Ingenieure GmbH is responsible for planning and implementation, and is once again demonstrating its expertise in complex, large-scale biogas projects.
The project's core involves fermenting sugar beet pulp, a by-product of sugar production, to produce biomethane. This process does not require additional raw materials or land use and contributes to decarbonization and the conversion of the sugar factory to renewable energies, thereby helping to achieve climate targets.
Krieg & Fischer's plant concept covers all the important phases of the project's planning and construction, from storing sugar beet pulp to treating fermentation residues and processing biogas into biomethane.
As early as 2026, it is expected that biomethane will be fed into the energy system. The resulting Bio-Energy-Hub will provide renewable energy for not only sugar production, but also other green raw materials used in the chemical industry.
‘Zeitz is one of three major projects that we are currently implementing, with two in Germany and one in Poland,’ says Managing Director Raphael Thies. He views the combination of industry as an energy consumer and renewable energy production as a model with significant future potential and added value for all parties involved.
