The commissioning of seven biomethane plants in the USA marks an important milestone in the use of sustainable energy. The process began at the end of 2024 with a smaller plant, “New York State 2”, which has a biogas upgrading capacity of 600 Nm³/h. In total, the plants are expected to achieve a raw gas output of more than 5000 Nm³/h, which corresponds to an electrical output of around 25 MW. Four plants are expected to be fully commissioned over this year. Two more in 2026 and the first biomethane plant already went into operation at the end of 2024.
A special feature of these projects is the exclusive use of cattle manure as a substrate. This makes a significant contribution to the circular economy and considerably reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
Krieg & Fischer Ingenieure GmbH was responsible for the basic evaluation, planning and project management through to commissioning. The company also supported the awarding of contracts and provided training to ensure the efficient operation of the plants.
With decades of experience in the US market, Krieg & Fischer works closely with local suppliers as an independent planning office. An innovative element of these projects is the integration of efficient heat recovery from the digestate, which further increases the energy efficiency of the plants.
The successful start-ups underline the growing importance of biomethane as a sustainable energy source and demonstrate the potential of modern biogas technology on the North American market.
